SHARDS
The lifecycle of conventional tiles made out of clay, stone or concrete begins in a quarry, or - if they are made from plastics - in an oil well. Shards avoids the environmental and social impacts associated with extractive industries by turning construction waste that is otherwise dumped in landfills into tiles.
To make our tiles, we sort the raw materials found in construction waste, crush them to powder, mix them with recycled glass and burn them in a kiln. Even when produced industrially, our tiles always look handmade as tiny undissolved particles create surface patterns that make each tile unique. When tiled in a setting, this creates a lively and beautiful aesthetic.
Although we don’t add any coloring, Shards tiles are available in a broad variety of colors and haptics. Our tiles are white, cream colored, grey, and black or shine in rich shades of blue and green. Some tiles are glossy, some are smooth to the touch and others are rough.
Shards tiles are a recipient of the German Federal Ecodesign Prize and the German Sustainability Award. They will be available on the market in 2023.
