Station of Commons

Station of Commons—an ongoing collaborative, Helsinki and Geneva based initiative on digital commoning practices by Grégoire Rousseau, Minerva Juolahti, Alain Ryckelynck, Constantinos Miltiadis, and Juan Gomez. Initiated in February 2020, Station of Commons  investigates the possibilities of reappropriating technology within public space. The point of departure of the research questions both centralized knowledge and data centers operated by major organizations and its underlying social implications. Station of Commons operates as an easily integrable online platform for sharing local resources.

Freies Radio Kassel

Freies Radio Kassel is a non-commercial local radio station in Kassel/Germany. Organized almost completely by volunteers, the radio is on air since 1997, broadcasting on regional FM frequency 105,8 MHz and online on www.freies-radio.org. The studio is located in the middle of the city of Kassel, direct at the Friedrichsplatz, the center of documenta. Freies Radio Kassel has a 24 hour program, consisting of any kind of content far away from commercial mainstream pop radio, including local culture and politics, community issues, education, acoustic arts and experiments as well as any kind of strange and weird music. Freies Radio Kassel was a location of documenta 14 in 2017, producing and broadcasting the "Whispering Campaign" by American artist Pope.L.

Kollektiv Eigenklang Radio

Kollektiv Eigenklang is an audio-visual performance collective exploring the unlimited posibilities of improvised and interactive live producing.

"eigenklang" is an experience which is hardly to describe. Due to ever changing settings, different participants and the research drive of the collective of the same name, every experience is different. It can be a sound playground, a musical team building, a very personal sound therapy or a collective audio trip ...

The technical process is always the same: All participants are connected via radio headphones to a binaural microphone based on human hearing in the centre of the installation. With the help of the latest modern music technology, we create fascinating soundscapes that invite listeners to immerse in. Depending on the mood, the “audience” can lean back and enjoy or participate, regardless of whether as a musician, visual artist, dancer or clown. The unique sound happening is mobile and takes place in a wide variety of locations - from clubs, festivals and galleries to residential projects, street crossings and rainforest clearings.

Radio Art Zone

Radio Art Zone launch – 100 days of radio art during the European Capital of Culture Esch2022

From the 18th June until the 25th September 2022, the radio station Radio Art Zone will broadcast a radio art programme around the clock on FM and as a livestream on the Internet. 100 international artists and groups are invited to create 22 hours each during the 100 days. It is the largest exhibition of radio art in the world. Radio Art Zone is a joint project of the independent Luxembourg broadcaster Radio ARA and the artist duo Mobile Radio (Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann) as part of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022.

On the 18th June the Radio Art Zone opening event is taking place at the Bridderhaus artist residency at 1 Rue Léon Metz in Esch-sur-Alzette: from 16:00 the residency opens to the public for the first time with a guided tour. From 18:00 the Radio Art Zone party begins in the rear courtyard and studio, peppered with live performances from the sound artist Andy Armstrong who is contributing the first 22 hour show.

A third of the shows will be carried out live in Esch, or arrive as livestreams from across the globe. “The pre- recorded works have started arriving already – ranging from the hilarious human speaking clock of Felix Kubin to the trance-inducing states of Haitian Vodou rituals from Jean-Daniel Lafontant (Temple Na-Ri- VéH). We are very excited about the upcoming programme,” says artistic co-director Sarah Washington. Two hours of each day are dedicated to the lunchtime show “À table!” in which the radio enters the kitchen of local citizens in the region of the European Capital of Culture. There is still time to apply to host one of these shows via the website.

Radio Art Zone will broadcast for 100 days from the 18th June to the 25th September 2022 on 87.8 FM in the south of Luxembourg, via live-stream on the internet, and by a roster of a dozen partner radio stations in Europe, North and South America.

Cashmere Radio

Cashmere Radio is a not-for-profit community experimental radio station which was originally based in Lichtenberg, Berlin for the first six years of its existence before recently moving to Wedding. The ambition of the station is to preserve and further radio and broadcasting practices by playing with the plasticity and malleability of the medium. We do this by both honouring and challenging its inherent qualities: it is both a physical station open to the public and an online radio; it has regular shows, yet opens itself up to extended and one-off events; it features extended generative music performances and installations at the same time as working within radio’s typical durations. In short, it is an attempt to enhance and celebrate the performative, social and informative power of radio that we believe lies within the form itself. fugitive radio was initiated by Sumugan Sivanesan to research migrant, queer and anticolonial issues and music in Helsinki and beyond, in collaboration with Pixelache Helsinki and generously supported by Kone Foundation (2020–2021). Since 2020 fugitive radio has sought to develop live, collectively realised modes of 'performance-radio' using free and open source tools. Live broadcasts are supported by {openradio}. Radio Nopal is a collective internet radio station located in Mexico City. Radio Nopal is an independent media focused on the critical scope of Latin-American cultural diversity and a meeting point for Mexico City's creative community. Good Morning, I Love You

This is a weekly radio show produced by Crossdressing Diogenes that airs on Barking Cats Radio, an online radio dedicated to the electronic music and underground sounds of Cyprus. We broadcast every Sunday morning, 10am to 12pm, a moment in the morning we model around an intersection that we find quite interesting. In the rave world, 10am can be the time you wake up, the time you go to bed, the time you reach the after party. It’s a beginning, an ending, and an interlude rolled up into one, and there is a universe of music that resonates with all of them.

We began with that question: “what is the musical intersection between these essential experiences within rave culture in Cyprus”. It revolved around IDM, Minimal, Deep House, Ambient, Jungle, and anything that could take us back to the golden moments that we have experienced at 10am over the years. The show does have a host, niko mas, but we devised a little experiment where, through the use of guests and anonymity, it is never clear who you are listening to. This impacts the way the music is heard, and hopes to decommoditize the show, giving the listener none of the usual information that shapes a listeners expectations and experience. we persevere to maintain enough experimentalism to make it as hard to predict as possible, without sacrificing a sense of flow. In some of the essays published by CDCY, we explore a lot of the ideas behind these experiments, including the all important notion of “affectivity and deep listening” as drawn out by Maria Cichosz (2014): music has an affective capacity, one which can be deeply useful in the specific context of neoliberalism and capitalist realism.

When we were invited to participate in Documents 15’s “Radio Lumbung” project, we immediately took the chance as the perfect excuse to explore the conceptual ideas behind “Good Morning, I Love You” in further detail. We have recently began writing about non-philosophy, one which argues that everything we experience is formatted for capital, or rather everything exists, to us, in its capital-form. This notion elucidates and expands upon ideas like capitalist realism, suggesting that all we can see is the form of capital.

When thinking about this, we romantically remember the pirate radio, and see those underground dance music broadcasts like a hand reaching out to shake people from their daydream. Somewhere within this, music, affectivity, deep listening, radio, and daydreaming, we see an idea of what a non-music might be beginning to emerge. In our tests, we stumbled into the idea that perhaps one of the only _places _where the non-form of things may manifest or present themselves to us, is in our dreams.

So we asked one final question: how might we use the notion of dreaming to influence how we approach the weekly improvisational recording which airs every Sunday morning? Can we turn our radio show into a radio-dreaming-jilting-machine?

Musa Ullakolla Archives

Musa Ullakolla Archives is a collection of live concert recordings from experimental music festival series organised in a virtual squat during the first pandemic year. The programme was curated by Finnish sound artists Samuli Tanner and Heta Bilaletdin, some events in collaboration with other underground organisers KRAAK and Kutikuti.

  During the first lockdown in early 2020 we visited an online rave in a virtual venue called Swggbo, a hacked version of a well known virtual world platform from the Y2K era. It was hosted by friends from Tampere, a local long term electronic music collective SWAEG.

They had built an online version of their huge industrial club and sound system and had big parties where people could attend as avatars. They agreed to our idea of using the platform for experimental concerts as well. Station of Commons let us use their channels for the audio stream.

  We started to build our own "rooms": virtual gardens, attics and swamps inside Swgbbo and invited artists to perform in these imaginary landscapes.  It was the highlight of the era of staying at home for months. This was the way to continue our practices, to be in touch with the community, dance & discuss & hear the sound pieces everyone continued doing in their bedroom studios.

Though it looked like old school fantasy game world & not realistic at all, those parties felt more real than video stream concerts, people actually being together, chatting and feeling each others presence in a shared space.

  Musa Ullakolla events became surprisingly big & international too, hundreds of people gathered there: artists and visitors from all around Europe, Japan, US, New Zealand and South America - in the shapes of gnomes, human-animal hybrids and blue skinned witches.

  As part of the Lumbung Radio project of Documenta Fifteen we are happy to share a big selection of sonic magic that happened in the virtual sphere around that time. Thank you Station of Commons for coordinating this project.

Angel-Ho: L'opéra de la nostalgie [HyperVigilant Mix 02]

‘L'opéra de la nostalgie’ is a 9-year celebration of original Angel-Ho instrumentals, collaborations and socio-political commentary in the diary of a black trans woman. It is rooted in the sonic roots of club and complex African identity encompassing rhythms and sounds unique to Angel-Ho's subconscious and alter ego. They display the femininity of being a trans woman sonically and present the theatrics of a fine artist. It is a conversation about the attitude of a trans woman being a boss as a Big Diva, in a Small World…

Angel-Ho is a Musician & Creative Director from South Africa Cape Town. Angel places contemporary social issues in performance, drag, and a digital space whereby they deconstruct the powers of oppression. In other words, diving into the fantasy of reality of being a feminine gender non-conforming queer African body with the capacity to critique the history we create as a society.

For the divergent, there is always additional work of managing effects of systemic violence and trauma, accounted for and held within the bodies of those most impacted. This fact doesn't dissolve at the door.

Our party insists on acknowledging and minimizing the exhaustion that comes with negotiating dancefloor euphoria against aggressions by ableist cisheteronormativity. What would it look like if the HyperVigilant themselves could occupy and dictate space for respite and care, in an otherwise ceaseless roulette of having to articulate defenses against hegemonic disturbances that disable us, whether inside or outside the party space? What would collective practice grow into if we began with learning how to do nothing in safe company?

For these mixes we invite artists and party organizers whose work we love to hear in bed.

Dhrubo Bio: Dhrubo Jyoti is a journalist and writer based in New Delhi. They work with the Hindustan Times, India’s second-largest English daily publication, and write on national affairs at the intersection of caste and sexuality. Along with being one a handful of Dalit professionals in South-Asian journalism, they also organise the movement around caste and sexuality in South Asia that aims to de-center upper-caste voices from the centre of LGBTQIA+ movements. They write narrative non-fiction centered on casted experiences of love and desire in South Asia. They hold a master’s degree in Astrophysics and a diploma in Journalism, and are interested in exploring the links between caste and desire, especially queerness through the works of BR Ambedkar. The Old Boys Network (OBN) Archive Podcast

The Old Boys Network (OBN) described itself as "the first international cyberfeminist alliance". Founded in 1997 as part of documenta X's Hybrid Workspace, the network was active until 2001. OBN's concern was to "provide a context for various artistic, theoretical, and political formulations related to cyberfeminism" (www.obn.org). Processing, archiving, and digitising this relevant history of the connection between feminism and technology was the goal of the obn_archive project. The guiding principles were based on the structure and ideas proposed by OBN itself: "the mode is the message - the code is the collective." This also includes linking this past to the present through oral history. A total of 12 interviews with former OBN members were conducted by Malin Kuht.

consonni is a publishers based in an independent cultural space located in the San Francisco district of Bilbao. Since 1996 consonni has been producing critical culture and at present they have opted for the printed word – together with the word that is whispered, heard, silenced or recited; the word that becomes action, that becomes body. On Care and Resilience

The Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care creates a platform for artists participating in documenta fifteen to speak in depth  about their work in conversation with curators and other practitioners.

Based in Ile de France (in and around Paris), The “Initiative” brings together curatorial, artistic, and health research and practices that enact solidarity and care, especially in situations when institutions disengage, fail or neglect. The Initiative constitutes an ecosystem and a space for new modes of sustainable relational institutionalism, based on the feminist and intersectional ideas of art institutions. Neither a classical collective, nor a rigid structure, the Initiative is researching and reinventing forms of care and solidarity beyond identity by its members who are artists, curators, refugees, asylum seekers, psychologists, horticultural therapists and researchers, among other.

Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care, founded by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez and Elena Sorokina, came into being in the Paris region during the first lockdown occasioned by the Covid-19 epidemic. Based on friendship and professional collaboration and coordinated by Johanna Fayau and interdependent curator Simona Dvorák, the Initiative has adopted the mission of bringing together curatorial and artistic research and practices associated with caring practices.

Station of Sounds goes Kiilan Äänipäivät – INTERVIEW SERIES

The third volume of Station of Sounds orients itself towards the physicality and ephemerality of the concept of a sound performance, and the volume is made in collaboration with Kiilan Äänipäivät to produce a series of interviews for lumbung radio as part of the documenta fifteen in Kassel, Germany.

Kiilan Äänipäivät is a yearly festival organised in the small village of Kiila on the island of Kemiö on the south west coast of Finland and it has been organised since 2014. This time the festival took place on Saturday July 23th, 2022. The core idea of the festival is to bring together new sound art, sound performance, and experimental music for people to experience in the village of Kiila. The performances take place in a variety of milieus, this year the venues included a garden, a forest, a beach, a potato field, and a sports field.

During the Station of Sounds goes Kiilan Äänipäivät discussions the seven artists of the festival discuss their relationship with sound and sound performance, as well as present some of their work. The interviewees and performers of this year’s Kiilan Äänipäivät:

Kenneth Bailey live at Trafohaus

Kenneth Bailey is the co-founder of the Design Studio for Social Intervention (DS4SI). His interests focus on the research and development of design tools for marginalized communities to address complex social issues. With over three decades of experience in community practice, Bailey brings a unique perspective on the ethics of design in relation to community engagement, the arts and cultural action. Projects he has co-produced at ds4si include Action Lab (2012- present), Public Kitchen (2011-present), Social Emergency Response Center(2017-present), People’s Redevelopment Authority (2018), and inPUBLIC (2019-present). Bailey was recently a Visiting Scholar in collaboration with University of Tasmania and also a founding member of Theatrum Mundi NYC with Richard Sennett. His new book (co-authored with DS4SI) is entitled “Ideas—Arrangements--Effects: Systems Design and Social Justice” (Minor Compositions, 2020). He received his MFA in Public Action from Bennington College in 2021.

Charm of Sound – HELSINKI EXTENDED

In the third week of August, 2022 lumbung radio presents every day a new episode of perspectives on sonic practices curated by the Äänen Lumo ry (Charm of Sound) association from Helsinki, Finland.

Äänen Lumo was founded in 1995 to promote sonic arts in Finland. Over the years, it has organised around three hundred events, including concerts, workshops and internet, film and gallery-based projects. For lumbung radio Äänen Lumo has reached out to the extended network of members and collaborators to contribute with their sounds for creating a sound collage of the inter-local sonic community.

About the PODCAST SERIES

The Archive as Contemporary Object ‘X’ (ArCo-X) is a podcast series project that investigates through discourse, the nature of the archival today, seeking to unpack the several system issues affecting the world around us, through a multifocal lens of archiving as artistic, curatorial, and research praxis. In these critical discussions, the invited speakers – critical thinkers, media theorists, data law and policymakers, social activists, political theorists, art and cultural workers, as well as the moderator/hosts – will examine how data censorship, power/knowledge matrix, and ‘direct, structural, and cultural violence’ affect the way we interface with data and shape our online archives. The project is crucial in consolidating the active and present voices to reveal how ‘queer anti-racist post-internet aesthetics’ may be utilised to create ‘Politically Conscious Archives’ for the future: as open-source, free, online platforms.

Episode 01: History as the Tool of the State, Memory as the Art of the Stateless

“I or people like me, we're not the subject of that history. We are objects of that history. We are not the ones doing things, we're not really actors in that history. This history is just things that happened to us. So that's when I was searching for something else, I think for another space in which to think about the past, think about the experiences, think about previous events, but not through that gaze, not through that thing which in itself has the idea of othering and which in itself has the idea of us and them. And in order to find that space that's when I found the space of memory. Of course, the space of memory is something that has been worked with for eternity. It's a very big concept in a lot of communities that haven't been in the ones that have power or aren't the rulers of history or rulers of how history is written. You can find traces of that all the way from the black experience in the United States to the Jewish diaspora experience, to today the Palestinian experience, to the indigenous struggle. They all are spaces that work with memory and memories are what have saved them. Memories are what has given them this moment of reflection and this moment of connection because they are ruled by histories that don't really treat them like subjects, but rather objects.”

Farbod Fakharzadeh is an artist, curator and storyteller based in Helsinki, Finland. His work deals with concepts of the archive, memory-work and history-politics and revolves around notions of collective construction and alternative ways of working and dreaming together. He currently serves as the co-artistic director for Catalysti, a support organization that advocates for transcultural artists living and working in Finland and works as a curriculum advisor for Node centre for curatorial studies in Berlin, Germany.

His research-based practice is to create immersive, interactive archival projects that map knowledges through a multifocal lens of violence, conflict, and trauma. In this episode, Dalida Maria Benfield speaks about enmeshed oppressions and simultaneously entangled liberatory futures. Through talking about decolonial pedagogics and methodologies informed through her own extensive practice, she articulates new frameworks for non- dis- and de- archiving.

Dr. Dalida María Benfield (Panamá/US/Finland) is an artist, writer, theorist, and curator. She is a co-founder and the Director of Research and Programs at the Center for Arts, Design, and Social Research (CAD+SR).

Dalida's work is focused on decolonial feminist rearrangements of the geopolitics of knowledge. Her research also considers “art education” as a praxis of unschooling. Her career spans leadership, curatorial work, and teaching in higher education and research institutes, NGO/non-profit cultural spaces, and independent media organizations. She has been the co-founder and/or director of numerous autonomous art and media platforms that support research and production, and create new publication and distribution channels, including the Institute of (Im)Possible Subjects. Her work also includes producing videos, installations, archives, artists’ books, workshops, and other interventions across online and in-person platforms and diverse spaces; often, collectively. Her writing is published in English and Spanish, and in translation to French, Portuguese, and Russian. Her PhD (2011) was awarded in Comparative Ethnic Studies from the University of California-Berkeley, and her MFA (1989) is from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a Fellow and Faculty Associate at the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society, Harvard University, 2011-2015.

Finland Inter Local brings together Finland based sound artists Minerva Juolahti, Samuli Tanner and Heta Bilaletdin in Trafo Haus. The performances range from audio performance based on the practice of breathing as practice of sighing, to electronic improvisation and electro folk. The event wants to produce this space of encounter and mingling together with Lumbung community at large. The performances are streamed live on lumbung radio. The event is a collaboration with Radio A.C, and supported by FRAME Contemporary Art Finland.

Minerva Juolahti (1987, Helsinki) is a visual artist and performance maker working with body, sound, space, and paper. Their practice evolves around the performativity of sound, and often they use the sounds produced by the human body as a starting point. surviving by expiration. surviving by letting go is a guided breathing practice, a practice of sighing, a practice of the sound of expiration, a performative gesture.

Samuli Tanner is a Finnish electronic musician, producer and drummer. He makes playful improvised sci-fi collages and beats made with self-built samplers, old tapemachines and new computers. In his music air and the opposite of air exists at the same time. It is clumsy on purpose, sometimes dark, sometimes syrup, makes you dance for few moments and then falls to pieces. Anything can be played either just once or repeated until midnight. But he does not move at all. Heta Bilaletdin is a multidisciplinary artist from Finland working primarily with moving image and experimental music. Samples, field recordings, singing, synthesizers, a computer, found objects and dusty 4track tapes are her main tools for creating eccentric lo-fi pop, rough dada dub and music concrete. Recently her music has been released by Fonal, Kraak and Krut.
